Baseball Stumbles In Opener

The Roughrider baseball team dropped the first game of a best-of-three series of the NJCAA Region I Division I Playoffs Thursday afternoon to Cochise College, 2-1. YC now has an overall record of 42-14.

Peter Lenstrohm was stellar in this pitcher’s duel throwing 8 strong innings, scattering 3 hits and striking out 3 batters.

Offensively, the Roughriders outhit the Apaches but could not push the runners across. YC hit into three double plays on the day and stranded 9 runners on base.

Drew Turbin was 4 for 4 with the lone run scored and Tim Arakawa was 2 for 4. Aaron Blair was 1 for 3 with the lone RBI.

The second game of the series will be played Friday, May 3rd beginning at 2:00 PM. If the Roughriders win, a third and final game will be played on Saturday with the winner advancing to the Region Championship Series on May 9-11 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

In other action: South Mountain beat Central Arizona, 4-2.
