Baseball Splits With League Leader

The Roughrider baseball team got a key ACCAC Division I sweep Tuesday afternoon at Central Arizona College in Casa Grande, 3-2 and 2-4. Yavapai is now 33-6 overall and 16-6 in the conference standings. Central Arizona is 30-7 and 17-5 in conference play.

Yavapai came from behind in the first game to extend their winning streak to 19 games. Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, YC scored 2 runs in their half of the sixth to tie the score and in the top of the seventh, Stephen Carbajal led off with a double and Michael Howard chase him home with the winning run.

Tim Arakawa was 3 for 4 with a triple. Krysthian Leal was 2 for 3 and Aaron Blair was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.

Jacob Doyle threw 5 innings to get the victory. Brandon Matthews threw the final 2 frames for the save.

In the second game, YC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring all of their runs in the top of the 2nd inning. However, Yavapai could only muster 2 hits after that.

Ryan Petersen took the loss giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits.

YC stays on the road with a doubleheader on Saturday at Cochise College (33-9, 19-5) in Douglas. Both teams split a doubleheader header earlier in the season in Prescott. YC won the first game 11-0 and Cochise won the nightcap 14-4. Saturday’s doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM.
