The Roughrider baseball team dropped a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix to GateWay Community College, 7-4 and 5-4. YC falls to 37-10 on the year and 20-10 in the ACCAC standings. GateWay improves to 25-22 overall and 17-15 in conference play. Cochise College remains in first place with a twin killing over Arizona Western on Tuesday and Central Arizona College is a half a game back of Cochise after a single game victory over South Mountain Community College on Tuesday. In the opener, YC jumped out to a quick 4-run lead after scoring two runs in each of their first two at bats. However, those were the only runs the Roughriders would score in the game. GateWay scored 1 in the second inning; 1 in the fourth inning; and 5 in the sixth inning.

Tim Arakawa and Drew Turbin were each 2 for 4 on the day and Brandon Matthews took the loss in relief of starter Jacob Doyle.

Extra innings were needed in the second game as both teams were tied at 4 at the end of regulation. In the bottom of the 10th, GateWay loaded the bases and won on a walk-off single to right field.

Chance Adams took the loss in relief of starter Ryan Petersen.

Offensively, Arakawa was 2 for 5 with 2 runs scored.

Yavapai travel to Tucson on Thursday, April 18th to play Pima Community College in a makeup game that was rescheduled due to the weather. YC pounded the Aztecs this past Saturday, 12-5 and 12-0. Thursday’s twinbill will start at 12:00 PM.
