In dramatic fashion, the Roughrider’s version of the “Cardiac Kids” baseball team won two games Thursday afternoon to improve their record to 20-5 overall. Yavapai pounded Monroe Community College, NY 14-4 in the first game of the day and beat #20 New Mexico Junior College in the nightcap, 9-8 in 11 innings.

In the opener, YC pounded 16 hits off of Monroe pitching including 6 for extra bases. Monroe drew first blood with 2 runs in the opening frame, however, the Roughrider nine responded three in their half of the first to take the lead for good. Yavapai added 9 more runs before Monroe scored again with two in the seventh inning.

Chance Adams got the victory in 3 innings of relief recording 5 strikeouts.

Offensively, Krysthian Leal was 4 for 4 with 5 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Kyle Toth was 4 for 5 with 4 runs and on RBI. Aaron Blair, Austin Murphy and Alexis Olmeda each had two hits. Murphy had a home run and 5 RBI’s.

YC used some late game heroics in the second game to gain a well-deserved win.

The Roughriders played catch-up the whole game. The only lead they had was the final score.

The “never-say-die” Riders found themselves down 7-5 in the 8th inning. In the bottom of the ninth, YC tied the score sending the game into extra frames. Both teams left the 10th inning scoreless but in the top of the 11th inning New Mexico’s Luis Hernandez hit a home run to take the lead. In their half of the inning, Kyle Toth led the rally off with a walk bringing Tim Arakawa to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Arakawa hit a bomb to right centerfield for the walk-off 2-4un home run.

In relief, Kamalu Kamoku took the victory with 3 innings pitched. Arakawa led the team with 3 hits. Murphy and Michael Howard each had 2 hits.

Yavapai continues non-conference play on Saturday, March 16, hosting Northeastern Junior College, CO. The single 9-inning game will start at 12:00 PM.
