Volleyball Donates Over $9,500 to Battle Cancer
The 2018 Mile High Battle Against Cancer broke all previous records. The venue for the event was bigger than ever, the number of participating teams grew from 2 to 8, the total number of sponsors grew to 11, and most importantly the amount of money raised by the event almost doubled from 2017 to 2018. The donation made to The Breast Care Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center totaled $9.551.38. The money was raised through t shirt sales by the participating teams (Yavapai College, Eastern Arizona College, Bradshaw Mountain High School, and Prescott High School) and the generous sponsorship donations from local business.
The growth and success of the event would not have been possible without the generosity of the Northern Arizona Suns who donated the facility and the cost to operate the Prescott Valley Events Center for the evening and Festival Sports who donated the volleyball equipment that was needed. There were 4 key individuals that made the Mile High Battle Against Cancer possible in 2018. We would sincerely like to thank Ashley Stoval of the Northern Arizona Suns, Scott Rubke of Spectra Experiences (managing group of PVEC), John Goodenow of the Yavapai Regional Medical Center, and Jennifer Taylor from Yavapai College. Without the time and effort of these 4 dedicated individuals the event would not have been possible.
The Roughriders, Gila Monsters, Bears, and Badgers would like to extend their gratitude to the following sponsors for their generous support; Safeway Grocery Stores, Barrett Propane, Marriott Hotels, AZ Cap Co., My Kid’s Dentist, Patterson Orthodontics, Lee’s Right-Way Market, Prescott / Prescott Valley Orthodontics and Chick-fil-A. The financial contributions from these sponsors is key to helping patients at The YRMC Breast Care Center pay for necessary treatments.
On the volleyball court the evening started off with the freshmen squads from Prescott and Bradshaw Mountain High Schools battling it out in a 3 set match. The Bears of Bradshaw Mountain came away with the victory 2-1. Following were the JV and Varsity matches between the Bears and Badgers. Bradshaw Mountain High school took the JV match 2-0 and then they completed the season sweep between the two rivals with a 3-0 victory in the Varsity contest.
The event finale was the collegiate match between Yavapai and Eastern Arizona. The Gila Monsters defeated the Roughriders 3-1.
Yavapai College Volleyball has been partnering with Yavapai Regional Medical Center to raise money for treatment and awareness about breast cancer screening for the past 6 years. Over that span the program has donated over $32,000 locally to the Breast Care Center at YRMC.
