Roughriders Advance to Region Championship with Win Over Eastern Arizona

On Wednesday evening the Yavapai College Volleyball squad took on Eastern Arizona College in the NJCAA DI region 1 Semi-Final and came away victorious. The Roughriders beat the Gila Monsters in 5 sets by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 27-25, 15-13. Both teams fought bitterly until the very end but Yavapai came away with its sixth 5 set win of 2018.

Freshman middle blocker Lacie Tenney was stellar hitting.400 with a team high 17 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Nynke de Vries was 2nd in kills with 13. Freshman outside hitter Zeleya Loop became a major contributer off the bench with 12 kills while hitting .211.

The Roughrider defense was much improved from the last time they played the Gila Monsters and finished the match with 98 digs. de Vries led the Roughriders with 24 and sophomore libero Victoria McCarty chipped in 21 digs to go along wither 4 service aces. Freshman setter Pilar Daugherty went the distance and finished with 58 assists and 7 digs.

Next up for Yavapai is another rematch with the Lady Matadors of Arizona Western College who won the ACCAC regular season crown and a bye in the first round of the Region playoffs. Yavapai is 2-1 against Arizona Western this season having dropped the first match in Yuma then taking the last two in Prescott both in close 5 set battles. The match is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Friday evening in Yuma. The winner will advance to the District Championship match against the winner of Region 5 West for a chance to earn a bid to the NJCAA DI National Championship Tournament.
