Baseball Drops 2 Close Games to Gateway
The Roughrider baseball team dropped a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to Gateway Community College, 4-2 and 10-9 in Mesa. YC falls to 20-19 overall and 9-11 in ACCAC play. The Riders have dropped 6 of their last 8 games.
In the opener, Yavapai struggled offensively despite outhitting the opposition. The Riders managed only 6 hits getting their first hit in the fourth inning. YC was held scoreless until they scored two runs in the top of the 7th inning.
Carlos Viera was 1 for 3 with 2 runs batted in. Jesus Valdaz took the loss from the mound.
The offense was better in the second game but the defense stuttered committing 4 errors in the game. Once again, YC outhit the Geckos, 10 to 6. Logan Williams led the Riders with 3 hits including 2 doubles. Tommy Sacco and Over Torres each had two hits.
The Roughriders attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth inning. Down by three runs, YC plated two runs to cut the final deficit to one. Taylor Frost took the loss from the bump.
YC returns to Roughrider Park for their next ACCAC tilt against Glendale Community College. The doubleheader will be played on Tuesday, April 3rd with the first pitch being thrown at 12:00 PM.
