Roughrider Baseball Splits Games with Coyotes
The Roughrider baseball team split a home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with the visiting Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert Community College. YC dropped an extra inning opener, 6-5 and bounced back in the nightcap winning 11-1. YC is now 20-15 on the year and 9-7 in ACCAC play. Chandler-Gilbert has a 19-19 overall record and a 6-16 conference mark.
The Roughriders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead through four innings. Chandler-Gilbert scored two runs in the fifth innings and took the lead with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Tommy Sacco hit a tape-measure home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings (per ACCAC rules, the first game of conference doubleheaders are 7 innings in length). In the top of the 8th inning, the Coyotes plated two runs. Yavapai managed only one run in their half of the eighth.
Sacco was 2 for 3 on the day. Jesus Pulido and Logan Williams each had two hits.
The second game was a scheduled 7-inning game due to the first game going into extra innings, but the Roughriders made it even a shorter game as they run-ruled the Coyotes in the sixth inning.
YC pounded 9 hits led by three doubles by Over Torres. Sacco was 2 for 4. Starting pitcher Dominic Hamel was dominant on the mound scattering 4 hits while striking out 10 batters.
YC has a make-up twinbill with fellow DI nemesis Cochise College on Thursday, March 29th at Roughrider Park. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
