Baseball Takes 1 of 2 from Lamar with a Walk Off RBI
The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader Friday afternoon against Lamar Community College. YC won the opener in dramatic fashion with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning, 1-0 and Lamar took the nightcap, 4-2. YC took 3 of 4 games from the Runnin’ Lopes in this home stand to improve their overall record to 14-13. Lamar is now 9-13.
Carlos Viera broke a 0-0 tie with a walk-off single scoring Matt Mendibles who began the inning with a single. Darius Vines went the distance in a gutsy performance from the mound. The lanky right-hander scattered three hits while striking out four.
Trevor Edior was 2 for 2 to lead the Riders from the plate. YC only had 6 hits in the game.
In the second game, Lamar jumped out to an early 4-0 lead scoring all four runs in the second inning. YC cut the lead in half in their half of the fourth inning but neither team could manage another run. Yavapai had its chances in the bottom of the seventh inning loading the bases with nobody out. However, Lamar got a strikeout and a double play to end the game.
Gianni Tomasi was 2 for 2 with an RBI to lead the Rider offense. Tommy Costello was the hard luck loser throwing 5 strong innings and striking out 6.
YC resumes conference play on Tuesday, March 20 entertaining Phoenix College (17-13, 8-10). The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park at Yavapai College.
