Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader with Arizona Western
The Roughrider baseball team did the splits with fellow DI conference foe, Arizona Western College, on Saturday winning the first game of a doubleheader in dramatic fashion, 8-6 and dropping the nightcap, 11-9. Yavapai is now 9-12 on the year and 3-5 in conference action. Arizona Western has a 13-8 overall record and a 6-4 mark in the ACCAC.
With the Roughriders down 7-6 with two outs, YC rallied with a walk to Carlos Viera, a single by Over Torres and walk-off home run by Alex Isola. Viera and Isola each had 2 hits. Viera knocked his third HR of the year.
Darius Vines threw .2 innings for the victory.
In the second game, Yavapai opened up an early 5-0 lead only to see the opponent score 11 unanswered runs. YC attempted a comeback scoring 2 runs in the 5th inning on two walks, a single and two doubles. YC cut the lead in half in the eighth inning on back-to-back home runs from Torres and Isola.
Tommy Costello took the loss surrendering 8 runs 4 unearned. Jonathan Stroman threw 4.2 innings striking out 7 batters.
Yavapai travels to Tucson to play Pima Community College on Saturday, March 10th. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
