Roughriders Take 2 Games from Gila Monsters
The Roughrider baseball team got their first ACCAC victories of the year Tuesday afternoon over Eastern Arizona College, 7-1 and 10-4. YC improves their overall record to 8-11 and their conference mark to 2-4. Eastern Arizona falls to 7-11 on the year and 1-5 in ACCAC play.
Roughrider starting pitcher Darius Vines was stellar on the mound as he allowed one earned run on three hits while striking out 7. The lanky right-hander took a no hitter into the fifth inning before surrendering two hits and one run in the inning. Taylor Frost pitched the final inning to secure the victory for the Riders.
Offensively, Cody Holtz was 3 for 3 and Trevor Edior was 2 for 3. Jesus Pulido was 1 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
In the second game, Yavapai had 13 hits including 4 for extra bases. The Green and Gold scored two runs in the 4th inning, 4 runs in the 5th inning, single runs in the 6th and 7th innings and two runs in the ninth.
Holtz, Pulido, Over Torres and Carlos Viera each had two hits and Alex Isola was 3 for 5 with three runs scored and 1 run batted in.
In relief, Michael Cartwright earned the victory throwing 3.1 innings striking out 5 Gila Monster batters while giving up one run.
The Roughrider return to the diamond on Saturday, March 3rd playing host to league leader, Arizona Western College. Earlier in the season, the Matadors took 2 of 3 games from the Roughriders in Phoenix. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
