Yavapai Splits with Cochise to Remain in Post Season Contention
The Roughrider baseball team split a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park with #7 Cochise College. The Apaches won the first game 8-6 and YC bounced back in the nightcap winning 11-1. Yavapai is now 31-21 on the season and 17-15 in the ACCAC. Cochise College is 40-12 overall and 23-9 in the conference standings.
In the opener, the Roughriders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, however Cochise put 7 runs on the board in the top of the third to take the 7-3 lead. Yavapai clawed back in the game scoring 3 unanswered runs. Cochise added one more in the 7th inning to secure the victory.
The Roughriders were led by Dallas Tessar and Matt Mendibles. Tessar was 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. Mendibles was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.
Once again, the Riders got the early lead in the second game scoring five unanswered runs in the first seven innings. Yavapai scored 6 runs in the seventh inning sealing the victory in the mercy-rule game.
Jaxxon Fagg led the Riders at the plate going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Caden Goldby and Matt Mendibles each had two hits with Mendibles getting the walkoff double.
Reza Aleaziz got the victory on the mound throwing 6 shutout innings striking out 6 batters.
YC continues the race for the post-season playing host to Arizona Western College on Tuesday, April 25th. YC split a doubleheader with the Matadors last month with AWC winning the first game, 5-1 and the Roughriders winning the nightcap, 8-3. Tuesday’s doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM.
