Volleyball Wins 3-1 at Home
The Roughriders started the match against the Coyotes on fire by building a lead of 8-0 behind sophomore setter Jordan Tilley’s tough serving. Yavapai continued to dominate the first set as they hit .281 (12 kills, 3 errors 32 attempts) and finished the set with a score of 25-14.
The 2nd set was a different story as Yavapai only hit .159 (14 kills, 7 errors, 44 attempts) which helped the Coyotes come away with a 23-25 victory.
After the intermission the Roughriders found their offensive rhythm again as they lowered their attacking errors to only 2 while banging out 13 kills on 33 attempts. The more efficient hitting percentage led to a 25-19 victory.
In the 4th and final set Chandler-Gilbert battled to then end and force extra points as Yavapai worked hard for a 26-24 win. The Roughriders had a match high 15 kills in the set, with 6 errors on 50 attempts for a hitting percentage of .180.
When asked to comment on the match Coach Shaver said “I am very proud of how our team battled and executed while in pressure situations. It was a solid victory and I am especially pleased with our defensive effort!” Yavapai finished the match with 94 digs (23.5 per set) and 8 total blocks (2 per set). Sophomore outside hitter Iva Alebic accumulated a match high 23 digs to go along with match high (tied) 16 kills. “Her double / double was a key to our victory.” commented Coach Shaver. Freshman right side hitter Kaytlin Yost also had 16 kills and 10 digs for the teams 2nd double / double of the match. Tilley had the team’s 3rd double / double with 46 assists and 16 digs.
Yavapai improves to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play. The Roughriders will be away from Walraven Gym for their next 4 matches. On Wednesday 9/28 the team travels to Scottsdale to battle the Artichokes at 7:00 pm.
