Volleyball Goes the Distance But Loses by 2 Points
The Roughrider volleyball team battled against the Broncos of New Mexico Military Institute but came up just 2 points short of the victory in the premiere match of the NMMI Classic on Friday night. Yavapai dropped the first 2 sets by scores of 14-25 and 24-26. Then the Roughriders battled back and won sets 3 and 4 by scores of 25-19 and 25-20.
The fifth set was as entertaining as they come. the crowd of over 2,000 military cadets did not leave their feet during the battle between the two team. The deciding 5th set saw Yavapai jump out to an early lead of 5-3 and eventually 8-6. From that point on the two teams traded points until the game was tied at 13-13. The Broncos earned the last 2 points of the match but the Roughriders battled until the very end.
Freshman outside hitter, Iva Alebic led the Roughriders offensively with 22 kills while hitting .333 and chipped in 5 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Park was second in kills with 15 kills (.238) and added 6 digs. Defensively the Roughriders were led by sophomore libero Brooke Donnelly who reached 20 digs in the match to go along with 1 service ace. Both sophomore middle blockers, Paige Hamilton and Shelby Mottram were efficient hitting a combined .276 with 11 kills between them. Sophomore setter Kayle Park started the match and collected 14 assist, then freshman setter Jordan Tilley took over the final 3 sets and helped out the offense with 24 assists. Both setters combined for 9 digs.
Earlier in the day Yavapai dropped their first match of the tournament to #19 Odessa CC by scores of 21-25, 25-19, 14-25, 19-25. The Roughriders could not muster enough offense and finished the match hitting .076. Outside hitter Iva Alebic led the team with 15 kills (.139) and added 13 digs. Libero Brooke Donnelly was excellent with a team high 23 digs.
Yavapai will return to action Saturday in the NMMI classic as they battle Garden City CC (KS) then challenge #20 Hutchinson CC (KS) in back to back matches.
