Riders Split Twinbill

The Roughrider baseball team split a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon with Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Chandler. The Coyotes took the opener 2-1 and Yavapai bounced back with a 5-0 victory for their first conference victory and first shutout on the year. YC is now 7-8 on season and 1-5 in ACCAC action. Chandler-Gilbert is 11-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

In the first game, being down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, YC scored on a sacrifice bunt to knot the game at 1. YC held the Coyotes scoreless in their half of the seventh. YC went down in the 8th without a sound and Chandler-Gilbert scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 8th for the victory.

Starting pitcher Chance Adams went the distance and took the loss scattering 7 hits and striking out 8. Offensively, Yavapai only managed 6 hits on the day.

The Roughriders got their first shutout of the season in the nightcap with the victory going to Andrew Mendoza. The California native went six innings, allowing only three hits and striking out seven.

Andrew Hermanson was 2 for 3 to lead the Riders.

Yavapai continues conference action on Tuesday, February 25th at Mesa Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
