Once again, the Roughrider soccer team won a match in dramatic fashion. This time to advance to the semi-finals of the NJCAA Division I National Soccer Tournament in Tyler, Texas. #4 Yavapai and #5 Eastern Florida State College, the Roughriders 81st different opponent, played to a 3-3 tie forcing the match into penalty kicks per NJCAA National Tournament rules. Yavapai prevailed knocking in 4 shots to Eastern Florida’s 2. Yavapai is now 18-2-6 on the season and Eastern Florida concludes their year with a 14-1-3 mark.

YC drew first blood five minutes into the match when Yabin Cruz found the mark on a pass by Kayd Marquez. The Titans tied the score with a goal shortly before halftime. Yavapai took a 3-1 lead before giving up 2 late goals that forced the game into the penalty kicks.

Prior to today’s match, two of the last three Roughrider victories came in the penalty kick phase. For the overtime period, Yavapai used their third goalkeeper of the game. Daniel Diaz got the nod in the final frame coming up with 2 masterful saves.

Yavapai advances to their 18th Final Four in their fabled history. On Friday, YC will face the top ranked Iowa Western Community College Reivers (23-0-0) beginning at 4:00 PM Arizona time. The Reivers beat Lewis & Clark Community College on Wednesday, 7-0. In the other semi-final match, #2 San Jacinto College-South will play the host school, #3 Tyler Junior College. The winners will advance to the Championship Match on Saturday at 5:00 PM Arizona time.
