Roughriders Take Down Matadors (#10) On The Road
Yavapai volleyball made the long trip to Yuma, AZ and returned home with a 5 set victory over the #10 ranked team in the latest NJCAA poll. The Roughriders took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-23. The team combined for 25 kills and only 7 errors in the first two sets. The next two sets saw Arizona Western reduce their errors and win with scores of 19-25 and 21-25.
Set 5 was a battle from start to finish. Most of the set the teams were no more than 2 points apart. Yavapai had the first match point at 14-12 but the Matadors were able to score 3 consecutive points to put themselves in control at 14-15. Yavapai was not rattled and then found ways to score 3 consecutive points and take he final set 17-15.
Yavapai’s blocking proved to be difference in the match. The Roughriders finished with 11 total blocks led by Braxton Fenter with 9 block assists. Yavapai’s backcourt was strong also accumulating 57 digs with libero Jasmine Solley leading the team with 20 digs. Setter Becca Long ran the balanced offense and gathered 41 assits. Casey Johnson led the offense with 15 kills and notched another double \ double adding 11 digs. Middle blockers Natalie Fahey and Braxton Fenter were efficient attacking with 11 and 9 kills respectively on a combined 39 attempts.
Coach Shaver stated “I am extremely proud of how hard this team works on a daily basis and how tough of competitors they have become!”
The Roughrider do not have time to rest as they Travel to Ephraim, UT on Thursday to prepare for 4 matches at The Badger Invitatinal hosted by Snow College.
