Roughrider Alum Assisted On World Cup Qualifier Goal
The United States Men’s National team win over Mexico 2-0 on Tuesday night plus the Honduras tie clinches a spot in the 2014 World Cup for the Americans. Honduras did in fact tie Panama 2-2, as former Roughrider soccer player Roger Espinoza (Yavapai 2005 & 2006) collected an assist on the second goal in the 61st minute. Espinoza, who played in the World Cup for Honduras in South Africa in 2010, needs another positive result in October to qualify for his second World Cup.
After his two years at Yavapai, Espinoza led Ohio State University to the NCAA Division One National Championship Game, scoring the Buckeyes only goal in the final. He was drafted by Kansas City of Major League Soccer and has played for the Wizards, now Sporting Kansas City for five seasons before moving on to Wigan F.C. where he led his club to the Football Association Cup championship in England last May.
Former Roughriders Goalkeeper Kelvin Jack (Yavapai 2007 & 2008) along with defender Avery John (Yavapai 2004 & 2005) played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany representing Trinidad & Tobago.
