Riders Split With Matadors

April 9th, 2013 » filed under: Baseball News, Top Story

The Roughrider baseball team split a home doubleheader with fellow ACCAC Division I foe Arizona Western College (27-16, 15-10) Tuesday afternoon. The Matadors won the opener 3-2 and YC bounced back in the second game, 9-5. YC is 35-8 on the year and 18-8 in the ACCAC standings. Despite the split, Yavapai kept pace with the league leaders, Central Arizona College and Cochise College who split their doubleheaders Tuesday.

Extra innings were needed to decide the first game (in the ACCAC, doubleheaders are seven innings and nine innings respectively unless the first game needs extra frames). Both teams scored two runs in the second inning and remained scoreless until the ninth inning when Arizona Western pushed the winning run across.

Starting pitcher Jacob Doyle was stellar in his eight innings pitched. The University of Arizona transfer scattered five hits and struck out 2. Brandon Matthews took the loss in relief.

Krythian Leal was 3 for 4 and Austin Murphy and Kyle Toth each added two hits.

Leal stayed hot in the second game with three more hits and two runs knocked in. Aaron Blair was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Stephen Carbajal and Toth were each 2 for 3 with Toth knocking in 3 runs.

Yavapai returns to the home diamond on Saturday, April 13th hosting Pima Community College. Prior to the start of the game, the 1975 National Championship baseball team and the first Roughrider baseball head coach, Gary Ward will be honored. The team, Ward and former athletic director and head basketball coach Dave Brown will be inducted later that night into the 2013 Yavapai College Athletic Hall of Fame. The festivities will start at 11:45 AM and the first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
