Riders Drub Bears

The Roughrider baseball team improved their overall record to 27-5 and their conference mark to 11-5 with a doubleheader sweep Saturday over Phoenix College, 3-2 and 12-1. The Bears fall to 13-19 overall and 4-12 in ACCAC play.

YC came from behind in the first game winning in the final inning on a RBI single by Krysthian Leal. With the game tied at 2, Brandon Matthews began the inning with a single and was forced out at 2nd base on a fielder’s choice by Kyle Toth. Drew Turbin followed with a single moving Toth to 2nd base. With a 2-1 count, Leal singled to left plating Toth for the victory.

Peter Lenstrom pitched the complete game for his third victory of the year. The righthander scattered 6 hits and struck out 4.

Offensively, Turbin, Leal, Aaron Blair and Matthews each had 2 hits.

In the nightcap, Yavapai pounded 17 hits en route to the run-rule shortened victory. Turbin was 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Tim Arakawa was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Leal, Austin Murphy and Michael Howard each had two hits with Howard knocking in two runs.

Matt Southard (4-1) threw 6 innings allowing 5 hits and striking out 4.

Yavapai takes a break from conference play hosting the North Shore Twins on Monday, March 25th. The single 9-inning game will start at 2:00 PM.
