Another Split For Baseball

The Roughrider baseball team split an ACCAC Division I doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Yuma against Arizona Western College, 1-2 and 3-0. YC is now 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the ACCAC. AWC is 15-10 on the season and 7-5 in the conference standings.

The opening game needed extra innings to determine the outcome. The score was tied at 1 at the end of the allotted 7 innings. YC went down quietly in their half of the 8th inning and the Matadors scored the winning run in their half of the frame for the victory.

Peter Lehnstrom was stellar in his 6 innings of action. The right-hander scattered 3 hits and struck out 5. Brandon Matthews took the hard-luck loss giving up the winning run.

Offensively, YC could only muster 3 hits on the game. Tim Arakawa,Kyle Toth and Matthews had the only hits.

In the nightcap, Matt Southard threw a gem to get his second victory of the season. The lanky Sooner threw 6 innings and struck out 3. Kamalu Kamoku pitched the final inning for the save.

From the plate, Krysthian Leal and Chris Burks had two hits apiece. Drew Turbin scored two runs and Alexis Olmeda and Burks each had an RBI.

YC remains on the road for their next contest. The Roughrider nine plays at Pima Community College (9-12-1, 6-6) on Saturday, March 9th. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
