Championships seem to follow former Roughrider great Jose Corona. As the head coach of Cortez High School in Phoenix, Corona has lead Cortez High School to yet another state soccer championship. In what was a rematch of last season’s Division III tournament state-title game, Phoenix Cortez defended its championship with a 4-0 win over Scottsdale Coronado on Friday night in Gilbert. Cortez, which won its third state title in four seasons, under the direction of Corona.

The NJCAA Hall of Famer, anchored the defense for the Yavapai College soccer team in the early nineties. His teams captured the 1990 NJCAA National Championship and was 1991 National Runners-up. He also lead the University of Illinois-Springfield to the NAIA National Title in 1993. Corona, a teacher at Cortez High School since 2002, has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Spanish from Northern Arizona University.
