Baseball Perfect On Opening Day

The Roughrider baseball team opened up the 2013 season with two victories on Friday in Las Vegas. Yavapai beat #17 Salt Lake Community College in the opener, 11-2 and used an 8-run ninth inning to beat the College Southern Idaho, 13-5 in the nightcap.

YC pounded out 15 hits in the first game led by Drew Turbin’s 3 for 3 day. Tim Arakawa, Michael Howard (3 RBI’s), Krysthian Leal, Alexis Olmeda and Kyle Toth each had 2 hits a piece.

Ryan Petersen got the start on the mound pitching 3.2 innings and surrendering 2 runs. Stephen Carbajal threw the final 5.2 innings to get the victory. Carbajal allowed 3 hits and struck out 11 opponent batters.

In the second game, Yavapai erupted for eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie for the decisive victory.

Offensively, the Roughriders got 9 extra base hits on 16 hits. Howard, Leal, Toth and Austin Murphy each had 3 hits. Turbin had 2 hits including a home run.

Justin McAllister got the victory in 5 innings of work. The freshman left-hander had 6 strikeouts and gave up 2 hits.

Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday with a twinbill against Colorado Northwestern Community College and College of Southern Nevada.
