Former Yavapai Soccer Player Named To Olympic Team

Former Yavapai College soccer player, Roger Espinoza, has been named to the Honduras Olympic Soccer Team and will be competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games later this month.

Espinoza from Denver, Colorado, played at Yavapai College during the 2005 and 2006 seasons helping the Roughriders compile an overall record of 46-2-3. In his sophomore year at Yavapai, he was selected to the NJCAA and NSCAA All-America Team and was also named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year (all sports) for the 2006-2007 academic year. Espinoza is one of 18 former Yavapai College soccer members in the NJCAA Soccer Hall of Fame.

In 2007, he led Ohio State University to the NCAA Division One National Championship Game, scoring the Buckeyes only goal in the final. He was drafted by Kansas City of Major League Soccer and has played for the Wizards, now Sporting Kansas City, since the 2008 season. In addition, he has a number of national caps representing Honduras, including 2010 World Cup appearances in South Africa.

Honduras will be playing in Group D with Spain, Japan and Morocco starting July 26.
