Softball Wins Region Opener

The Roughrider softball team won their first game of the NJCAA Division I Region I Tournament over Central Arizona College, 12-7. YC advances to Saturday to play Eastern Arizona College winners over Pima Community College, 3-0.
Despite being outhit, the Riders made the most of their hits in the victory. Brandi Heimburg was 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Ashleigh Seipel was 2 for 5 with a home run, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Brittany McCray, Tessa Fanning and Miraya Montiel each had two hits and two RBI’s.
Mel Willadsen threw 4 1/3 innings for the win. The Red Mountain high school product scattered nine hits and one walk.
Saturday’s game will start at 9:00 AM with the winner advancing to the championship game. The loser will play an elimination game immediately following.
