Season Ends For Baseball

May 11th, 2012 » filed under: Baseball News, Top Story

The season came to abrupt halt for the Roughrider baseball team Friday afternoon with a loss in the NJCAA Region I Division I Championship Series to Central Arizona College, 10-6. YC finishes the season with a 40-20 overall record and their 13th ACCAC title and 8th under head coach Sky Smeltzer. Central Arizona advances to the NJCAA West District Finals.

The Vaqueros began the scoring on the day with a lone run in the second and two more in the third. They followed that off with four more runs in the sixth before Yavapai responded with four of their own in their half of the sixth. Central added three more runs in the ninth to secure their sixth consecutive Region I title.

Tyler Urps led the Riders offensively with a double, a home run and three runs batted in. Kyle Young and Jordan Negrini each added two hits a piece.

Peter Lenstrohm took the loss from the mound, his first of the year (8-1).

In addition to the ACCAC crown this year, the Roughriders secured head coach Sky Smeltzer’s 600th career victory and placed seven players on the All-ACCAC team.
