YC Wins Home Opener

In their home opener, the Roughrider softball team swept a doubleheader over South Mountain Community College Saturday afternoon, 8-0 and 2-1. Yavapai is 27-4 overall and 16-2 in ACCAC play. South Mountain falls to 8-16 on the season and 8-10 in conference action

Estela Pinon (10-1) pitched the shutout in the opener improving on her nation leading strikeout total with ten whiffs on the game. Taylor Riesgo was 3 for 4 with three stolen bases and an RBI. Brandi Heimburg, Alexis Lawton and Kasey Oliver each had two hits.

It took extra innings in the nightcap for the Roughrider to nail down their ninth consecutive victory on a 2-out walk-off bases loaded RBI single by Kasey Oliver. Mel Willadsen pitched the full nine innings for the victory. Kat Macias provided the only other run for the Roughriders with a home run.

Yavapai returns to the home diamond on Tuesday, March 6th hosting fellow DI opponent Arizona Western College. The doubleheader will start at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
