‘Fat Tuesday’ Is Good For Softball
The top ranked Roughrider softball team swept a road doubleheader on Mardi Gras day at the hands of the Vaqueras from Central Arizona College Tuesday afternoon, 5-2 and 6-0. YC improves their overall mark to 21-4 and 10-2 in league play. CAC falls to 10-12 overall and 6-8 in the ACCAC.
In the opener, Yavapai’s two All-American pitchers combined for the two hit victory. Estela Pinon got the win throwing six innings, scattering six hits and striking out five opponent batters. Mel Willadsen pitched the final inning for the save.
From the plate, Taylor Riesgo was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Brandi Heimburg, Kat Macias and Miraya Montiel each had two hits. Pinon helped her cause with a double and three runs batted in.
In the nightcap, the game was tied 0-0 going into the top of the seventh inning when the Roughriders struck for six runs to secure the victory.
Willadsen got the complete game shutout allowing four hits while striking out five. Heimburg added two more hits for her day. Alma Cortez and Ashleigh Seipel each had two hits. Kasey Oliver was 1 for 1 with two RBI’s and Tessa Fanning was 1 for 1 with a triple and a run scored.
The Roughrider nine returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 25th at Glendale Community College (3-11, 1-7). The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
