Amidst the distraction of having their program discontinued after this season, the Lady Rider basketball team overcame the adversity to beat Glendale Community College Wednesday night in the Storm Center, 90-80. YC improves to 17-8 overall and 9-8 in ACCAC action. Glendale falls to 6-15 overall and 4-13 in league play. With the victory, YC remains in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the NJCAA Division I Region I basketball tournament with five games remaining.

Freshman Bernadette Sanchez had a record-breaking night as she dropped 41 points on the Gauchos. That breaks the single game scoring record of 38 points previously held by Courtney Ault (2005-07). Earlier in the season, the Albuquerque native broke the record for most free throws made and attempted in a single game (16/19 against Pasadena Community College). The only other Roughrider in double figures was Antoinette Miller. The 5’7″ guard had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Yavapai entertains #21 ranked Arizona Western College on Saturday, February 12th. The contest could possibly be a preview of the first round of the playoffs. Last month, the Matadors got the best of the lady hoopsters as they won 74-64 in Yuma. Saturday’s game will tip-off at 5:30 PM.
