Lady Hoopsters Lose Upset Bid

The Lady Rider basketball team lost to #21 Arizona Western College on Saturday night in overtime, 91-90. Yavapai falls to 17-9 on the year and 9-9 in the ACCAC. Arizona Western improves to 25-1 overall and 17-1 in conference action.

Yavapai took a 40-35 lead into halftime and led by as many as ten in the second half. With 4:45 left in regulation, Kayla Williams hit a lay-up to make the score 72-67. However, the visiting team scored the final four points to tie the game at 79 at the end of regulation. The lead changed hands four times in overtime with AWC taking a 91-88 lead with five seconds remaining. After a YC timeout, Arizona Western player Jolie Olingende received a technical for touching the ball out of bounds before it was entered into play. Ashley Wirtzberger hit the ensuing free throws to put the score at 91-90. YC had one last chance with the ball under their own basket, but a shot by Bernadette Sanchez at the buzzer fell short.

Antoinette Miller led the Riders with 25 points. Sanchez followed her 41-point performance on Wednesday with 15 points Saturday night. Kayla Williams had 14 points. Veronica Celaya added 12 and Wirtzberger chipped in 11.

Yavapai remains in contention for the playoffs with Eastern Arizona College losing to Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday night. They were playing host to Glendale Community College Saturday night. The lady cagers return to the hardwood on Wednesday, February 16th against Scottsdale Community College. In their first meeting, YC beat the Artichokes in Scottsdale, 70-52. The game will be played at Walraven Gymnasium with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
