Former Roughrider Signs Contract

Former Roughrider basketball player Larry Owens has signed a training camp contract with the New Orleans Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is the second summer that Owens has spent in the Hornets’ training camp. The Mesa native played for YC from 2001-2003. In his sophomore season, Owens set and still holds the record for most points scored in a single season (796), most rebounds in a single season (365) and most steals in a single season (85). Moreover, the 6’7” forward holds the record for most points scored in a career at Yavapai College (1193)

Owens spent last season playing 35 games for Belgacom Liege Basket in the Belgium league where he averaged 12.8 points and 4.2 rebounds. In 2007-08 in 38 games for Belgacom Liege Owens averaged 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 33.8 minutes per game.

Following Yavapai College, Owens finished his college career at Oral Roberts University. In his senior season, he averaged 12.5 points and 7.9 rebounds for Oral Roberts and was named Mid-Continent Conference Defensive Player of the Year and also was selected First Team All-Conference.
