Head Coach Stacy Iveson has announced her recruiting class for 2011. The third-year coach will lose 7 sophomores after this season and will be replaced by the following future Roughriders:

Mel Willadsen – Right handed pitcher from Red Mountain High School in Mesa, AZ. Mel throws hard and also has the ability to mix her speeds. She took her “Killer Bees” ASA team to the 16U National Championship game this past summer. She also led her high school team to the state championship game last season as a junior.

Stella Pinon – Right handed pitcher from Sunnyside High School in Tucson, AZ. Stella has great velocity and movement. She helped her team to a state championship in 2007.

Alyse Harris – Right handed pitcher from Cherry Creek High School in Denver, CO. Alyse led her team to a great run in the Colorado State High School championships this year by throwing a no hitter in the quarterfinal. With the addition of these three talented players, our pitching staff should be very strong next season.

Tessa Fanning – Catcher from Mingus Union High School in Cottonwood, AZ. Tessa is a strong defensive catcher and hitter. She has great arm strength and good mechanics behind the plate.

Ashleigh Seipl – Catcher from Highland High School. Ashleigh is a very quick and aggressive catcher with a strong arm. She is a switch hitter with good power from the right side. Ashleigh caught for the 2009 16u National Runner Up “Killer Bees” team out of Phoenix, AZ.

Sierra Rodriguez – Utility infielder from Basha High School in Chandler, AZ. Sierra is one of the top hitters and defensive players in the state. Sierra helped her high school win back-to-back state championships and was also an integral part of the Killer Bee’s run at the national title last summer.

Alexis Lawton – Utility outfielder from Mesquite High School in Gilbert, AZ. Alexis is a strong defensive utility player. She hits for average and power. Alexis was also a member of the 16u Killer Bees 2009 National Runners up.

Nicole Rascon – Outfielder from Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, AZ. Nicole is a very quick left-handed hitter and outfielder that can bunt, slap and swing.

Miraya Montiel – Infielder from Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, AZ. Miraya has great range at shortstop and hits for power from the right side.

Brittney Gant – Infielder from Casa Grande High School in Arizona City, AZ. Brittney is a very athletic player. She has great range in the middle infield and hits for power from the right side of the plate.

YC never got started Wednesday night as SCC took a two-point lead into halftime. The Roughriders fell behind by as much as 13 in the second half as they played without starting point guard Kiki January who turned an ankle in the first period. YC made a game of it cutting the lead to three points with less than a minute to go in regulation. However, timely free throw shooting from the opponent and poor free throw shooting from the Roughriders was too much to overcome in the end.

Yavapai was led by Julianne Forte` for the third straight game with 18 points. Kira DeMorales added 17 points and Lerrin Cook chipped in 16.

The #1 ranked Roughrider softball team split the season opener Friday afternoon in Las Vegas dropping the first game to #13 Salt Lake City Community College, 14-3 and winning in the second over Western Nevada, 12-2.

In the opener Audrey Workman and Christina Hagberg took the mound surrendering 11 hits and 7 earned runs between the two. From the plate, Molly Brossart was 2 for 3 with a run scored. Danielle Muniz and Emily Cooper were each 1 for 3 and Ashley Snedeker was 0 for 1 with 2 walks and a run scored.

The Roughriders bounced back in the nightcap with 12 runs. Alex Landon and Krystal Palmer were solid from the mound allowing only 2 earned runs and 3 hits. Brossart was 2 for 3 with a homerun and 4 RBI’s. Muniz was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Chelsea Pineda was 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI’s. Landon was 2 for 3 with a double. and Vanessa House and Cooper each added one hit a piece.

Head Coach Stacy Iveson said, ” First game we came out back on our heels. We were playing tentatively, and it showed. Salt Lake is a good team, but we can play with them when we are being aggressive. We did a good job of coming back in the second of game. Overall I thought we had a good approach at the plate. Our pitching staff needs to do a better job managing counts and working ahead of batters.”

Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday, January 30th at 10:00 AM against #20 College of Southern Idaho and at 2:00 PM against Chipola College.

The seven-time NJCAA National Champion Roughrider soccer team finishes the National Tournament in a tie for fifth place after a tying Essex County College, 1-1 Sunday morning in the Consolation Finals in Trenton, NJ. According to NJCAA rules, consolation championships do not play overtime. YC finishes the season tied for fifth in the country and keeps their 19-year streak alive of never having a losing record at the NJCAA National Tournament. In addition to that streak, YC has never lost a consolation match which is “a tribute to the players, past and present, playing with tremendous pride”, said Head Coach Mike Pantalione.

Essex County got on the board first with a goal in the 36th minute of play. YC scored the equalizer and final goal of the match in the 42nd minute of play when Gavin LaFollette found a streaking Gabriel Okito who deposited the ball into the back of the net. The Roughriders had their opportunities as they outshot Essex, 22-11. Essex earned their trip to the National Tournament by beating the host school and national soccer powerhouse Mercer County Community College.

Gabriel Okito was named to the NJCAA All-Tournament Team. Ricky Gabrielson, Gavin LaFollette, Drew Russell, Ryan Fuertsch and Kyle Woodson had solid performances throughout the week.

As a team, Yavapai received the Sportsmanship Award for the tournament. That marks the fifth time that a Pantalione coached team has garnered such an honor.

YC concludes the season with a 19-5-1 overall record, their 19th Region I Championship and their 19th trip to the National Tournament in the past 20 years.

There will be a new NJCAA Division I soccer champion this season as the two-time defending national champion Roughrider soccer team fell in the National Quarterfinals to Louisburg College, NC, 3-1. YC was looking to become only the second junior college to win the national title for three consecutive seasons. St. Louis – Florissant Valley Community College accomplished the rare feat in 1969, 1970 and 1971.

The Roughriders opened the scoring on the day with David Malloy finding the back of the net in the 15th minute of the match for the lone YC goal. In the 21st minute, Louisburg scored a goal and found the net in the 47th minute and 66th minute to advance to the National Semifinals.

As a result of the loss, Yavapai falls into the Consolation Bracket and will face Iowa Central Community College on Friday morning. Iowa Central lost to the #1 seeded Tyler Junior College in the first match of the tournament, 5-1. Yavapai and Iowa Central have played once before. In 2002, en route to their fourth national title, the Roughriders beat the Tritons, 3-1 in the National Semifinal match. YC went on to beat Mercer County Community College, 2-1 in the National Championship game.

Friday morning’s match will kick-off at 9:30 AM Eastern Time, 7:30 AM Arizona Time. If the Roughriders win that match, they will advance to the Consolation Finals Sunday morning at 9:00 AM ET.
