The Yavapai College women’s basketball team stumbled Wednesday night against the Lady Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College (13-9, 7-8) 66-62. YC falls to 13-9 overall and 11-4 in ACCAC action.

YC never got started Wednesday night as SCC took a two-point lead into halftime. The Roughriders fell behind by as much as 13 in the second half as they played without starting point guard Kiki January who turned an ankle in the first period. YC made a game of it cutting the lead to three points with less than a minute to go in regulation. However, timely free throw shooting from the opponent and poor free throw shooting from the Roughriders was too much to overcome in the end.

Yavapai was led by Julianne Forte` for the third straight game with 18 points. Kira DeMorales added 17 points and Lerrin Cook chipped in 16.

Yavapai will be at South Mountain Community College on Saturday, February 6th. In their first meeting of the year, YC beat the Cougars 66-54. Tip-off will be at 2:00 PM.

Before the crowd could settle into their seats, the lady ballers found themselves down 15-0 and could never regain their composure. The halftime score was 35-11. Unfortunately, turnovers spelled doom for the Roughriders. Midland scored 35 points off of 30 YC turnovers.

Julianne Forte`led the home team in scoring with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Lerrin Cook chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds.

The Lady Rider basketball season came to a halt in Yuma Wednesday night with an 86-82 overtime loss to the Matadors from Arizona Western College. YC finishes the season at 17-14 overall and AWC advances to the NJCAA Region I championship game on Friday at #2 ranked Central Arizona College.

Yavapai was ice cold from the field in the first half shooting a lowly 27% from the field. As a result, AWC took a 36-26 lead into intermission. Yavapai came out of halftime with renewed energy and cut the lead to 4 points, however the opponent took a 13-point lead with 4 minutes to go. Behind torrid three-point shooting (11 for 19), YC closed the gap to three when Kiki January hit a game tying trey with 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into an extra period.

Yavapai took an early lead in overtime but did not have an answer for the inside game as Western went to the line 10 times hitting seven and YC missing their only attempt at the charity stripe.

In her final game as a Roughrider, Danielle Reiher led the team with 20 points. Freshmen Julianne Forte` and Lerrin Cook each had 17 points including a combined 5 for 8 behind the three-point line. B`jonee Reaves added 11 points and January chipped in 10 points.

The Lady Rider basketball team had their 7-game winning streak snapped this afternoon at the hands of #4 ranked Pima Community College, 72-64. The Aztecs sweep the two-game series for the season. Yavapai is now 17-11 overall and 13-7 in ACCAC play.

Yavapai shot a dismal 33% from the field and 25% from behind the arc while allowing the opponent to shoot 45%. Julianne` Forte led the lady hoopsters with 16 points. Bjonee Reaves and Danielle Reiher each had 14 points. Yavapai was out rebounded 40-33. Four players had five a piece.

YC awaits the results of the Mesa Community College/Arizona Western College game played later tonight. If AZ Western wins, Yavapai will be traveling to Yuma for the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday, March 4th. If Mesa wins, with two games left in the regular season, the lady hoopsters mathematically can still host the first round. However, Western holds the tiebreaker as a result of their two wins over Yavapai this season.

Yavapai entertains Mesa on Tuesday, March 3rd in the last regular season home game. It also is sophomore night. The team will honor their only two sophomores Sandy Cook and Danielle Reiher. Mesa beat the Lady Riders in Mesa earlier in the season, 66-58. Tip-off will be at 5:30 PM.

The Lady Rider basketball team advances to the NJCAA Region I Championship Game on Friday after an overtime victory over visiting Cochise College tonight in the Storm Center, 95-91. That is the second time this season that these two teams have gone into overtime and in both instances, Yavapai has come out on top. Waiting for the Roughriders is Central Arizona College, who had a bye in the first round.

With 2:14 remaining in the first and the game tied at 34, Cochise player, Erin Murphy went down with a badly broken ankle. After emergency personnel arrived and saw to the situation, Cochise went on a 7-2 run to take a 41-36 lead into intermission.

The Lady Apaches extended their lead to 12 points shortly after the half, but the Lady Riders showed their resiliency and eventually went on top by five. However, the opponent would not roll over and at the end of regulation the score was all knotted up at 80. Yavapai seized control in the overtime to advance to the title game.

YC had 7 players in double figures led by Ebony Ward with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. Paris Dunford had 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. ACCAC Player of the Year Tehani Goldsmith was held to 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Rachael Beck came off of the bench to hit 13 points including three 3-pointers. Kellie Snyder had a double-double with 12 points and twelve rebounds and three assists. Taameka Pruitt and Jonisha Carson each chipped in 10 points. Pruitt nabbed 7 caroms and Carson had three assists and four steals.

The Roughriders travel to Coolidge on Friday, March 7th to face the #1 Central Arizona College Vaqueras for the right to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Salinas, KS. CAC swept the Lady Riders this year in both meetings. The game will be played on the campus of Central Arizona College and will tip-off at 7:30 PM.

Having already clinched a home play-off spot, the Lady Riders went into tonight’s game against Cochise College with nothing more to play for than to finish out the season. The Lady Apaches on the other hand had everything to play for. With a victory, Cochise would secure the final play-off spot, however, a loss would knock them out completely and Arizona Western College would earn the position. The inspired Apache team took advantage of the moment and beat Yavapai 94-84 to gain the play-off berth. YC concludes the regular season with a 20-10 mark and 18-4 record and second place finish in the ACCAC standings.

Yavapai opened the game with a 6-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game. That was the final advantage that the lady hoopsters would have on the night as Cochise opened up a 24-point margin going into halftime, 50-26.

The Lady Riders picked up the intensity after intermission and found themselves down by four points with 1:10 remaining in the game. YC had to foul the rest of the way and the game ended in the 10-point deficit.

Tehani Goldsmith finished the game with 32 points, shattering the single season scoring record held by Cindy Kinderknecht in 1987-88. Goldsmith currently has 581 points and the old mark was 565. Paris Dunford and Ebony Ward added 14 points a piece with Ward picking up 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 steals. Playing on a hurt leg, Kellie Snyder knocked in 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

YC enters the NJCAA Region I Play-offs as the second seed and will play host to these same Lady Apaches. The game will be played on Wednesday, March 5th in the Storm Center with tip-off at 7:30 PM. The winner advances to the Regional Championship Game on Friday, March 7th at #1 Central Arizona College and the chance to earn a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, Kansas.

It is Head Coach Brad Clifford’s 12th consecutive year with over twenty victories. Yavapai is now 20-9 overall and 17-4 in conference play and have sewed up second place and a first round home playoff spot.

Yavapai started out slow falling behind in the first five minutes 18-7. However, after shaking off the five-hour bus ride, YC took a 35-33 lead into the intermission. After numerous lead changes and ties, Yavapai hit free throws in the end to come away with the seven-point victory.

Tehani Goldsmith led the charge with 22 points. Paris Dunford hit for 12 points and Sandy Cook had 11. Kellie Snyder led the team in rebounding with 9 and steals with 7.

Yavapai concludes the regular season on Friday, February 29th against Cochise College. The game is not without playoff implications. Cochise and Arizona Western College are fighting for the final playoff spot. If Cochise wins, Yavapai will host the Apaches. If YC wins, AWC will be the first round opponent. In their first meeting of the year, the lady hoopsters beat CC in overtime, 82-75. Tip-off will be at 5:30 PM in the Storm Center on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.

Despite having a badly sprained shooting thumb, Tehani Goldsmith led the squad with 24 points. Jonisha Goldsmith added 17 points with four assists and Ebony Ward added 11 points. As a team, YC shot a respectable 47% from the field however, CAC connected on 59% of their shots.

With three games remaining, YC finds themselves two games up on third place Arizona Western College. Head Coach Brad Clifford’s team needs to win one of the remaining three to lay claim to a first round home playoff spot. Yavapai holds the tiebreaker with AWC as a result of sweeping the season series.

Chandler/Gilbert Community College, the #11 ranked team in NJCAA Division II, comes to town on Saturday, February 23. In their first meeting of the year, Yavapai beat the Coyotes, 65-50. Tip-off will be at 2:00 PM in the Storm Center.

YC falls to 9-3 in conference play and 11-9 overall.

The two setbacks put YC at 7-7 overall, but more importantly they remain 5-1 in the ACCAC standings.

On Friday, Yavapai could not overcome sluggishness and overall bad play as the Lady Badgers from Snow College won 65-53. The going got tougher on Saturday; YC played #14 South Plains College, TX. The Lady Riders responded with a better effort and a chance to upset the nationally ranked Texans. Yavapai held an 8 point lead with 10 minutes to play but faltered in the end to lose 68-64.

Tehani Goldsmith led the squad in scoring both nights with 18 and 19 respectively. Sandy Cook had 10 points in the first game and 9 points in the final game. For the first time this season, Yavapai was out rebounded in back to back games.

The lady hoopsters return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 8th against South Mountain Community College. The game will be played at the Storm Center on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott. Tip-off will be at 5:30 PM.
