Volleyball Signs 4 for 2019

The Yavapai Volleyball coaching staff has added 4 new players to their roster for 2019. These 4 prep athletes signed their National Letters of Intent inking their commitment to become a Roughriders earlier this week. Head Coach Zach Shaver said ” We are excited about the athleticism and volleyball experience that these 4 players will bring to our program. All 4 are quality individuals who will make our team stronger!”

Heather Wanninger is a libero from Glendale, AZ who is dynamic and plays the defensive position with a big presence. She plans to major in Physical Therapy and has had a stellar career playing for Liberty HS and LiverWire Volleyball Club. Heather has received several individual honors including: Peoria Unified School District All District 1st Team (libero), AIA 2nd Team All-Region, 5A Northwest All-Region 2nd Team, and Liberty HS Most Valuable Player. Coach Shaver commented “When we first saw Heather play as a sophomore her skills as a passer and defender were already polished but what impressed us the most was the competitive presence she brought to the court and her fearlessness on defense.”

Alia Rasmussen is a setter from Pleasant Grove, UT who is very athletic and could play several positions at the collegiate level. She has had a distinguished prep career at Pleasant Grove HS and for Club Utah. She is currently undecided on about her major. Some of her numerous awards include: qualifying for 14U AVP Junior National Championships, USAV Regional Sand Champion, competed in the USAV Juniors Sand Olympics, Utah 6A High School State Sand Champion, a member of the West Coast Regional AAU Championship team, 4 Consecutive Utah State Title Final appearances, Wasatch Festival Tournament Most Valuable Player, Academic All Region (2016, 2017, & 2018), nominated for 2018 Utah State All-Star Team for two positions (setter & libero). “Alia’s knowledge of the game of volleyball far exceeds her age and her ability to make dynamic plays as a setter, attacker, and defender make her a special type of player that you do find very often!” stated Coach Shaver.

Brianna Garcia is a middle blocker from Anthony, NM who is a versatile player that poses a complete volleyball skill set. She plans to major in Physical Therapy and played her high school volleyball at Gadsen HS where she was a member of the varsity squad all 4 years. Brianna also had a strong club career at Texas Performance Volleyball Club. Twice she earned All-District 2nd Team honors. Brianna is also a member of the Hispanic National honor Society. When asked about Brianna Coach Shaver said ” When we saw her play with her club team we saw that she was a talented attacker and blocker in the middle position. What we did not realize until she attended our summer camp is that she is also solid passer and defender. Although she should contend for playing time in the middle blocker position we will not limit her to that role and she could possibly challenge for time as an outside or right side hitter. Not many players can be effective as a middle blocker and have the skill set to play as a pin hitter as well. This makes her a special and unique player that we wanted on our team!”

Kennedy Wright is an outside hitter from Cave Creek, AZ who is an extremely powerful attacker. She played for Cactus Shadow HS and plans to major in Business / Estate Law. Her awards include: Cactus Shadow HS Most Valuable Hitter, 5A Northeast Valley 1st Team, 4A Skyline Region Player of the Year, Varsity Offensive Player of the year, 4A Skyline 1st Team. While playing for LiveWire Volleyball Club Kennedy led her team to a Bronze Medal in the National Division at the Girls junior national Championship and USA Division Champions at the Red Rock National Qualifier. Kennedy also earned academic achievement as an Honor Roll member all 4 years of high school. When asked to describe Kennedy Coach Shaver said “She is exactly what we look for in an outside hitter! She is a great passer, explosive attacker, and most importantly she is confident and aggressive on the court. Each time I have seen Kennedy in action I become more impressed with her as a player. I am excited to see what she will accomplish while wearing the Green & Gold!”

These 4 outstanding signees will join 11 returning players and a team that finished 2018 as the NJCAA DI Region 1 Runners Up.
