Volleyball Continues to Win in Dramatic Fashion
On Friday evening in a rowdy Walraven Gym the Roughriders earned their 4th straight victory. It was the 2nd win this week which required all 5 sets and extra points to decide. The win over #6 Glendale CC improves Yavapai’s ACCAC record to 5-4 and their overall record to 14-8. It is also the team’s 4th victory over a nationally ranked opponent.
Yavapai started the night off sluggishly in set 1 as they fell 21-25 due to a lack of offense. The team could only muster 8 kills and produced 9 hitting errors for a hitting percentage of -.020. In set 2 the offense came alive and produced 9 kills with only 1 error for an outstanding .242. The improved hitting percentage and strong serving produced a 25-12 win in set 2.
After the intermission the Roughriders again struggled to consistent offensively as the hit .020 and lost set 3 20-25. With their backs against the wall down 2 sets to 1 the Roughriders rallied and produced a match high 12 kills in the 4th set and took the set 25-17.
In the deciding 5th set things looked good early for Yavapai as they held a point advantage until midway through the set. Then some unforced errors and untimely communication breakdowns put the Roughriders 1 point away from the loss. With Glendale holding a commanding 14-9 lead freshman setter Pilar Daugherty and freshman middle blocker Lacie Tenney hooked up for a kill that kept Yavapai alive. With the score 10-14 sophomore libero Victoria McCarty went back to the service line with the Gauchos having 3 match points. McCarty would never relinquish the serve as Yavapai did the impossible and rattled off 6 more consecutive points to take set 16-14 and the match 3 sets to 2.
After the match Coach Shaver said “Tonight’s win was all about determination and the will to never give up by our team. To come from behind in set 5 down 14-9 is unimaginable and to do it with 7 straight points is crazy. Coach Van Vleet and I are very proud of all the effort and energy our players have poured out on the court this week and it led to 2 big wins over nationally ranked teams who are also the top 2 teams in the ACCAC. We could not have achieved these 2 overtime wins without the support of our fans who made our home court the best place to play in the ACCAC. We want to especially thank the Roughrider Soccer and Softball teams for their enthusiastic support!”
The Roughrider will look to push their current winning streak to 5 next week as they take on the Fighting Artichokes from Scottsdale CC on Wednesday at 7:00 pm at home.
