Volleyball Bounces Back to Win Both Matches on Saturday in Las Vegas

After 2 losses on Friday to nationally ranked opponents the Roughriders showed true grit early on Saturday morning as they earned a hard fought victory over Utah State University – Eastern while playing in the Coyote Classic. The tournament was hosted by College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas.

Against the Eagles the Roughriders came out strong with a balanced attack and took the first set 25-19. The second set Yavapai was too complaisant defensively as the lost 14-25. The third and fourth sets were a baatle between the 2 teams worthy of a Las Vegas boxing title fight. The teams traded set victories with identical scores of 25-22. USUE took the third set and Yavapai the fourth set. Both teams looked weary in the fifth set but Yavapai cam from behind late after being down 5-8 to take the decisive set 15-13.

Freshman outside hitter Annie Harte led the Roughriders with 10 kills and she also chipped in 13 digs. Sophomore libero Victoria McCarty led the team’s defense with 22 digs and freshman setter Pilar Daugherty added 12 digs to go along with 31 assists.

Yavapai finished off the day with a 3-0 sweep over Victor Valley CC (CA).

The Roughriders will return to ACCAC action on Wednesday as they travel to Thatcher for a showdown with the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona College at 7:00 pm.
