Roughriders Roll Over Cougars
The Yavapai College Softball team opened up ACCAC play Tuesday afternoon in Phoenix with a doubleheader sweep over South Mountain Community College, 12-0 and 10-2. YC runs their overall record to 5-2 and a perfect 2-0 in conference action.
In the opener, Roughrider pitcher, Kiana Spencer, went the distance in the run-rule shortened game striking out five and allowing 1 hit. Offensively, YC had 10 hits including three home runs. Shelby Hotchkiss was 2 for 2 with two RBI’s and three runs scored with a home run. Meredith Clark was 2 for 2 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Brianna Griffiths was 1 for 2 with three RBI’s and 2 runs scored and a home run and Makayla Guerra was 1 for 4 with a home run and three runs knocked in.
The hit parade continued in the nightcap as the Roughrider bats had 12 hits. Hotchkiss continued her torrid hitting going 4 for 5 with three RBI’s. Katelyn Kubitschek was 2 for 5 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Jaya Allen was 2 for 3 with one run scored. Allen was the winning pitcher scattering five hits and seven strikeouts.
The Roughriders travel to Yuma on Friday and Saturday, February 2nd and 3rd in the Great Western Shootout. On Friday, YC will play College of Southern Idaho and Trinidad State College and on Saturday, the Green and Gold play Luna Community College and College of Southern Nevada. On Tuesday, February 6th, the Roughriders will resume conference play at Paradise Valley Community College.
