Softball Upsets #2 Salt Lake in Route to a 3-0 Start
The #6 ranked Roughrider softball team opened the 2018 season with three victories in the Southern Nevada Kickoff Classic in Henderson, Nevada on Friday.
In the opener, YC faced off with fellow top ten foe, #2 ranked Salt Lake Community College. YC came out on top of the epic affair, 7-6. Salt Lake took the early lead in the top of the first inning but Yavapai responded with a two-run home run from Makea-Al Kaluau in their half of the frame.
YC added two more runs in the third but Salt Lake posted 4 runs in their half of the 5th to regained the lead. The Green and Gold tied it up in the bottom of the fifth and retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Salt Lake posted one run in the 7th to conclude the scoring.
Kianna Spencer threw the final 1 and 1/3 innings to record the victory.
The offensive floodgates opened in the second game as YC five hit home runs in an 11-2 shellacking of Utah State-Eastern. Kaluau hit her seconde of the day and Jaydee Boursaw, Makayla Guerra, Neenah Pangillinan and Meredith Clark each went deep.
Santana Parra went the distance from the circle for the win.
The Roughriders posted 4 runs in the first two innings of the third game but that was all they need needed in a 4-1 victory over El Paso Community College. Kaluau and Kalee Mabray each had two hits in the contest and Spencer and Jaya Allen combined for the five-hit win.
YC plays two more games on Saturday in the Border Classic playing College of Idaho in the opener and Snow College in the finale.
