Volleyball Advances to Region Playoff Despite Coming Up Short in Yuma

Yavapai traveled to Yuma, AZ to take on the Lady Matadors of Arizona Western College on Friday night with a chance to clinch as share of the ACCAC regular season Championship. Unfortunately the Roughriders fell in 4 sets by scores of 21-25, 24-26, 25-23, 14-25. The loss lowers the team’s ACCAC record to 8-5 (good enough for 4th place) and overall record to 14-12. Despite the loss Yavapai earned the #2 seed in the Region 1 / District B playoffs. They will face Seminole State (OK) on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Walraven Gym. The winner advances to play for the championship on Friday at Eastern Arizona College. The District B Champion will advance to the NJCAA DI national Championship Tournament in Hutchinson, KS.

A sputtering offense kept Yavapai from returning home with a victory on Friday night. The Roughriders could only muster a .028 hitting percentage compared to .211 for Arizona Western. The combination of attacking and service errors (36) limited their scoring chances. In set 3 Yavapai was able to muster their best set of the night with 12 kills, 6 errors, and 42 attempts (.143) which ended in a 2 point win and forced a 4th set.

The Roughriders now have their sights set on a 2nd District Championship and birth into the National Championship Tournament. Standing between them and their goal is Seminole State College with a record of 14-12. Last time the Roughriders and Trojans met it was in the 2015 District Championship match in which Yavapai won 3-0. Waiting in the District Championship match after earning a bye is a familiar opponent in ACCAC rival eastern Arizona College. This season the Roughriders are 2-1 against the Gila Monsters. Yavapai won the first match up of the season 3-2 (Aug. 31st), won the second 3-0 (Sep. 29th), then lost the third 1-3 (Oct. 20th).

The District Semi-Final match is set for 7:00 pm on Wednesday Nov. 1st in Walraven Gym on the campus of Yavapai College.
