Volleyball Sweeps Eastern Arizona on the Road
On Friday the Roughriders made the long journey to Thatcher, AZ to challenge the Gila Monsters of Eastern Arizona College. Yavapai improved their conference leading record to 6-1 with a 3 sets to none victory. The final scores were 25-17, 26-24, 25-21. Yavapai’s overall record now stands at 11-8 as they have won 5 in a row.
Both outside hitters, Jailynn Butler (sophomore) and Nynke de Vries (freshman) led the Roughriders offensively with 10 kills a piece. Overall the team finshed with 34 kills and only 13 errors for a team hitting percentage of .130. Yavapai was outstanding defensively as well with 44 digs and 6.5 total blocks. The leader in the back court was freshman libero Victoria McCarty who grabbed 12 digs. She was followed closey by freshman setter Kanani Hiapo who contributed 11 digs and 27 assists.
When asked about the 3-0 victory in hostile territory head coach Zach Shaver said ” I am extremely proud of how our team executed at the end of each of tonight’s sets when the pressure was high! We set out on Monday with a goal to improve by 10% this week and this road victory shows that we have accomplished that goal. I could not be more proud of our team’s effort and dcetermination right now!”
Yavapai will take a break from ACCAC competition on Wednesday as they square off with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the Crosstown Battle Against Breast Cancer. This is the 5th year in a row that these 2 teams have met with the purpose of raising funds for the fight agaisnt breast cancer. It will definitely be a fight as both teams are currently #1 in their respective conferences. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Breast Care Center at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott Valley, AZ. T shirt for the event are $10 and allow you free entry into the match which starts at 6:00 pm on Wednesday October 4th. The 2017 Crosstown Battle Against Breast Cancer will be in Walraven Gym on the Yavapai College Campus. Don’t miss this exciting event!
