Volleyball Beats Casper but Falls to Southern Idaho

In the team’s third match at the Star Invitational hosted by the College of Southern Idaho Yavapai came out strong going up 2 sets to none. The Roughriders won by scores of 25-16 and 25-18. Then Yavapai started to lose their offensive rhythm and too many errors led to losses in sets 3 and 4 (23-25 and 19-25). Luckily the Roughriders again found that rhythm in set 5 and won in dominant fashion 15-5.

Sophomore Kaytlin Yost and freshman Nynke de Vries combined for 32 of the team’s 53 kills, 14 and 18 respectively. Yost also chipped in 4 service aces and 4 block assists (both team highs). Freshman setter Kanani Hiapo (last week’s ACCAC DI Player of the Week) contributed 46 assists and 13 digs (both team highs).

In their final match at the tournament yavapai battled aggressively with the host College of Southern Idaho but the #6 ranked team proved to be too much for the Roughriders as they fell 22-25, 19-25, 13-25. Set 2 was one Yavapai’s best offensive outputs of the season as they knocked down 13 kills, with only 1 error, on 34 attempts which led to a hitting percentage of .353. No Roghrider was able to manage double digit kills but outside hitter Nynke de Vries again led the team with 9 kills. Setter Kanani Hiapo had a team high 8 digs to go along with her 25 assists. Both libero Victoria McCarty and outside hitter Nynke de Vries had 7 digs each.

The Roughriders will return to ACCAC action on Wednesday as they host Glendale CC 7:00 pm and then Arizona Western College on Friday again at 7:00.
