Volleyball Starts Conference Play With a Dramatic Come From Behind Win

The Roughriders started their first ACCAC match in a hole by dropping the first 2 sets by scores of 23-25 and 24-26. Then after a brief intermission Yavapai stormed out to take set 3 by a score of 25-17 with a match high 15 kills. The team then followed that win up with a 4th set victory (25-17) by hitting a match high .225. When the 5th and deciding set started it was a back forth affair with the Gila Monsters having an 8-6 lead at the side switch. Then Yavapai found an extra gear and finished the second half of set 5 on a 9-3 run. Bailey Anderson had a huge kill on match point which finalized the victory at 15-11.

Sophomore middle blocker Baylie Stephens led the Roughriders with team highs in kills (17), hitting percentage (.341), and total blocks (7). Freshman outside hitter Nynke de Vries was 2nd on the team with 16 kills. Freshman setter Kanani Hiapo distributed the offense very effectively and finished with 45 assists, 7 digs, and 1 service ace. Freshman libero Victoria McCarty led the Roughrider defense with 22 digs and a passing rating of 2.57.

When asked about the win Head Coach Zach Shaver commented “I am very proud of our team’s resiliency and determination tonight. Coming from behind 0-2 this early in the season against a quality opponent is not easy to do!”
