Volleyball Finishes Opening Weekend in Las Vegas 2-2
To open the 2017 season the Roughriders traveled to Las Vegas, NV to participate in the Coyote Classic hosted by the College of Southern Nevada. The squad returned home to Prescott on Sunday with 2 wins and 2 losses.
Yavapai took on one of the best programs in the country right out of the gate when they played #8 College of Southern Idaho. Unfortunately the Golden Eagles were too much for the Roughriders who fell 0-3 by scores of 15-25, 18, 25, 16-25. Yavapai played well in the 2nd set and built a 3 point lead but a timeout called by CSI in the middle of the set sparked a comeback for eventual winners.
In the 2nd match of opening day the Roughriders took on another quality opponent in Laramie County CC who received votes in the coaches’ poll but was just outside the top 25. The teams battled in 3 close sets with the Roughriders taking set 2 (25-20) but eventually LCCC pulled away and won the 4th set 25-12.
Yavapai started off the 2nd day of the season with a back and forth affair with Saddleback CC out of Southern California. The Roughriders earned their first victory of 2017 (3-1) with scores of 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 27-25.
While playing in the final match of the Coyote Invitational Yavapai found it’s rhythm and earned a 3-0 victory over Sheridan College (WY). After a close set 1 (26-24) the Roughriders took control and finished the 30-0 sweep with scores of 25-16 and 25-19.
Some individual statistical standouts included; sophomore right side hitter Kaytlin Yost with 31 kills, sophomore middle blocker Baylie Stephens with 16 total blocks, freshman libero Victoria McCarty with 37 digs, and freshman setter Kanaini Hiapo with 85 assists.
The Roughrider will open ACCAC competition at home on Thursday 8/31 as they welcome Eastern Arizona College to Walraven Gym at 7:00 pm. Yavapai will host their 4th annual Roughrider Invitational the following 2 days (Friday & Saturday) as 7 teams come to Prescott. Yavapai will play Colorado Northwestern (Fri at 1:00 pm), Snow College (#11) (Friday at 7:00 pm), Utah State University-Eastern (Saturday at 11:00 am), and College of Southern Nevada (Saturday at 4:00 pm)
