Softball Remains in the Hunt for a District Championship

The Roughrider softball team went 1-1 on the first day of NJCAA Region I Tournament play. YC began the day falling to Eastern Arizona College, 13-3 and concluded the day with a 10-0 victory over Pima Community College in an elimination game.

Eastern Arizona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after three and a half innings. In the bottom of the third, YC scored three runs to take the lead on a Raelynn Rios home run. However, In their half of the fourth, the Gila Monsters scored three runs to regain the lead and put the game away in the top of the fifth posting 8 runs.

Rios was 2 for 2 with two RBI’s. Karissa Pena was 2 for 3 and Shayna Ige was 1 for 1 with a run scored.

In the second game, Mahina Chong got the Roughriders on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning. YC pushed 2 more runs over in the second inning and added five more in the third inning and one more in the fourth inning.

Kiana Spencer threw 3.1 innings to get the victory.

Yavapai continues tournament play on Saturday, May 6th at 10 AM. YC plays Eastern Arizona College. The winner will advance to the first championship game against Central Arizona College, who is undefeated.
