Baseball Take 2 Games from Central Arizona

The Roughrider baseball team improved their playoff chances with a doubleheader sweep over fellow ACCAC Division I foe Central Arizona College, 3-1 and 8-5. The victories give the Yavapai Nine a one-game lead for the fourth and final playoff spot. YC is now 30-20 on the season and 16-14 in the conference standings. Central Arizona falls to 33-17 overall and 17-13 in the ACCAC.

Avery Weems pitched a gem in the opener throwing a complete game striking out 12 Vaquero batters. Central Arizona scored their only run in the sixth inning tying the score at 1. Offensively, Dallas Tessar knocked a solo home run in the opening frame. YC scored the winning run in the seventh inning on 3 walks and a single and added a run on a sacrifice fly.

Tessar and Dylan Enwiller had the only hits for the Roughriders, Enwiller was 2 for 2 with run scored. Tessar was 1 for 4 with a home run.

In the nightcap, YC had to come from behind to get the victory. The Vaqueros scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the third before Yavapai put five runs on the board in their half of the fourth inning. Yavapai added single runs in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings. Central Arizona attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth posting 2 runs before Andrew Gross struck out the final batter for the save.

Zach Pederson threw 6 innings to get the victory. The sophomore hurler scattered four hits while striking out 9.

Enwiller led the Rider offense going 2 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 3 runs batted in. RJ Cordeiro, Jaxxon Fagg and Matt Mendibles each had two hits.
