Yavapai Dominates Gateway 25-5 in 2 Wins
The Roughrider softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Phoenix over Gateway Community College, 16-5 and 9-0. The ACCAC leading Roughriders are now 42-5 overall and 38-4 in conference play. Gateway falls to 10-36 on the year and 7-33 in ACCAC action.
Yavapai had to come from behind in the opener after a slow offensive start. Yavapai put five runs on the board in the 2nd inning and Gateway tied the game in their half of the frame. YC took over the lead in the third inning and added two in the fifth, two in the sixth and 6 in the seventh.
Raelynn Rios and Karissa Pena each had 4 hits. Rios hit two home runs. Mariah Kalamaras had three hits and also hit two home runs. Shayna Ige was 2 for 3. Andrea Sotelo added to her Yavapai all-time leading home run total with a dinger in the seventh inning.
Amy Robinson got the victory from the slab pitching 5.1 innings and striking out 5.
The Roughriders made quick work of the Geckos in the nightcap. Gateway did not have an answer for Kiana Spencer, the reigning NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week. The lefthander allowed only two hits with one strikeout.
Andrea Sotelo was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles. Shayna Ige, Mahina Chong and Karissa Pena each had two hits. Jaydee Boursaw hit her league leading 26th home run.
Yavapai continues ACCAC action on Tuesday, April 18th at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. YC swept a doubleheader in March from the Coyotes, 8-0 and 11-0 at Bill Vallely Field. Tuesday’s twinbill begins at 1:00 PM.
