Roughriders Battle and Earn a Split in a Pair of 1 Run Games

The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon over South Mountain Community College. YC dropped the first game 10-9 and won the nightcap 8-7. Yavapai is now 28-20 on the year and 14-14 in the ACCAC standings. South Mountain is 33-15 overall and 19-9 in conference play.

In the opener, YC jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. However, the Cougars clawed back to tie the game and take the lead in the later innings. YC managed to close the gap to one after a two-run homer from Caden Goldby but the Riders could not regain the lead. Goldby, Cory Wills and Carlos Viera each had two hits.

Jake Kolterman took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Roughiders squandered a 5-0 lead in the nightcap. With the game tied at 6 in the ninth inning, South Mountain took the lead on a wild pitch. YC responded in their half of the final frame with a single by Jeddediah Fagg who was chased home on a triple by Dallas Tessar. Tessar scored the winning run a batter later on a Cougar wild pitch.

Tessar, Dylan Enwiller, Carlos Viera and Jeddediah Fagg all had multiple hits. Cory Wills, Jonathan Villa and Enwiller each hit a home run.

Andrew Gross threw 2.2 innings to gain the victory.

Yavapai continues ACCAC play on Tuesday, April 18th at Central Arizona College. The doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM.
