Roughriders Outscore Matadors 19-5 in Sweep

The Roughrider softball completed the season sweep over Arizona Western College Tuesday afternoon in Yuma with a doubleheader sweep, 8-4 and 11-1. YC beat the Matadors in February, 12-0 and 4-2. Yavapai is now 40-5 on the season and 36-4 in ACCAC play. AWC falls to 29-20 overall and 21-19 in the league standings.

In the opener, Yavapai scored 7 runs before the Matadors could get a run on the board. Andrea Sotelo led the Riders going 3 for 4 with two home runs. Jaydee Boursaw and Raelynn Rios each had two hits and Karissa Pena was 1 for 4 with a home run.

Amy Robinson earned her 16 victory of the season striking out 4.

The Roughriders came from behind in the second game with Arizona Western posting their only run in the first inning. YC scored multiple runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Andreas Sotelo hit her third home run of the day in the victory which gave her a career total of 36 home runs breaking the Roughrider record previously held by Brittany Tucker. Jaydee Boursaw hit her nation leading 25th home run in the game and Raelynn Rios hit the long ball also. Mikayla Newham, Mahina Chong, Kalee Mabray and Shayna Ige each had two hits.

Kiana Spencer got the victory in the circle. Earlier in the day, Spencer was named the ACCAC DI Pitcher of the Week for her efforts last week. The New Mexico native threw 14 innings in victories over Central Arizona and Mesa and didn’t allow an earned run while striking out 12. It is the second such award for the freshman lefthander.

Yavapai continues conference play on Saturday, April 15th at Gateway Community College. YC swept a twinbill from the Geckos in Prescott 20-0 and 8-0. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM.
