Roughriders and Geckos Split on Saturday
The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon with the visiting Geckos from Gateway Community College. Gateway won the opener, 4-2 and YC bounced back in the nightcap, 12-7. YC is now 23-17 overall and 9-11 in ACCAC action. Gateway is now 15-21 on the year and 9-15 in conference play.
In the opener, Gateway scored two runs in the first inning and one in the fourth to take the early lead. The Roughriders cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Cory Wills, Dylan Enwiller and RJ Cordeiro hit back to back to back doubles. The Geckos scored an insurance run in the seventh inning and YC stranded two runners in their half of the inning.
Jake Kolterman was stellar on the mound despite taking the loss. His line was: 7 innings pitched, 4 hits, 4 runs and 3 strikeouts.
YC had to come from behind in the second game to record the victory. Gateway jumped on the Roughriders early scoring 4 runs in the first inning. YC chipped at the lead and tied the score in the third inning but the visitors scored two in the fourth only to be countered by three runs from the home team in their half of the fourth. YC added two more in the sixth inning and 3 in the seventh.
Cory Wills hit two home runs and Caden Goldby hit a solo shot to lead the Roughrider offense. Wills was 2 for 3 with four RBI’s and two runs scored. Goldby was 4 for 4 with 3 ribbies and 3 runs scored.
Hayden Durkiewicz earned the win on the mound throwing 3.2 innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 4.
YC continues ACCAC play on Tuesday at Glendale Community College. The doubleheader begins at 12:00 PM.
