Softball Continues Winning with Dominant Performance on Saturday
The Roughrider softball team hit 7 home runs Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Cougars from South Mountain Community College, 9-0 and 7-0. YC improves to 28-3 overall and a league leading 24-2 in conference play. South Mountain falls to 8-23 on the year and 6-20 in the ACCAC standings.
In the first game, Andrea Sotelo hit two home runs including the walk-off homer to lead the Riders to the lop-sided victory. Mahina Chong was 2 for 4 with two doubles.
Yavapai established the lead in the first inning on a run scoring double from Chong and a homer by Sotelo. The home team scored in every inning but one. Mariah Kalamaras led off the 2nd inning with a solo home run and Jaydeee Boursaw knocked a two-run shot in the fifth inning.
Amy Robinson was solid in the circle throwing the complete game two-hitter while striking out 2 Cougars.
Sotelo led the Roughriders in the second game with a home run and a double with two runs batted in. Boursaw hit two home runs, making it three on the day.
Kiana Spencer got the victory from the slab. She worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning with two strikeouts and a groundout.
Yavapai continues conference play on Tuesday, March 21st when they entertain the NJCAA Division II #3 ranked team, Phoenix College. Both teams split a doubleheader in their first meeting of the year with YC dropping the first game, 8-0 and winning the nightcap 5-2. Tuesday’s games will begin at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
